FBC #3 – Politics [1 page]
An Executive Concern: Business Owners and Executives
Politics comes from the Greek word “polis” that means people, or what people do.
As a practical business matter, politics are social and business rules that specify:
What is required,
or what people must do to fulfill their intentions
What is allowed
or what people may do if they choose while fulfilling their intentions
What is forbidden,
what people may not do, or what will thwart their ability to fulfill their intentions
… in different social, financial, political, economic and technological situations.
Politics can be informal or formally codified into written laws.
Examples of informal rules include the proper way to dress for a wedding or speak to an elder.
Formal rules include what may, or may not, be asked of an employee and that people must fulfill their legal contractual obligations.
Politics is “financial” because it affects businesspeople’s capabilities to fulfill their financial intentions.
It is “strategic” because taking care of political obligations enables businesspeople to execute, improve and design new strategies.
It is “competitive” because knowing the rules, whether businesspeople follow them or not, or being able to affect the rules, is used to produce and increase competitive capabilities and advantages, productivity and value.
